Jerman School, named for previous Superintendent Elmer C. Jerman, opened its doors as the high school building in 1912, became the junior high in 1957, and since 1972 has served in its present capacity as an upper grade elementary. Jerman Elementary School is a facility designed to meet the needs of all fifth and sixth grade students in the Greensburg Community School Corporation. There are special areas for media services, computer education, special education, art, music and physical education. The 1988 remodeling made the building handicapped accessible with the addition of ramps and an elevator.
Classroom teachers incorporate a variety of research-proven strategies designed to reach the specific needs of a broad range of students. Educating the "whole" student with a stress on basic skills are both important at Jerman. All Jerman School staff members strive to provide a safe, orderly, caring environment where children can feel good about themselves. Building self-esteem and encouraging self-discipline are integrated into the regular curriculum. A parent states "Jerman is a great place to learn." Some other opportunities available at Jerman School include:
- A computer lab and computers in each classroom designed to supplement instruction
- A music curriculum offering band, choir and general music
- An active Student Council
- Regular awards programs to honor students for academic performance, citizenship, attendance, and behavior
- Media fairs, Book-It, Spelling Bees, Caring and Sharing for Kids
- DARE (Drug Awareness Resistance Education) in cooperation with the Greensburg Police Department
- GROW (Geographic Review of our World), ADD (Arithmetic Developed Daily) and DOL (Daily Oral Language) which are programs that offer a ten minute review of everyday skills in Geography, math and language.
- Educational field trips and convocations
- A parent volunteer organization and parent involvement on school committees
- A weekly newsletter sent home to inform families of upcoming events, school happenings, and student recognition
- A student developed newspaper
- A boys' and girls' intramural basketball program.
