Calf Purchase Plan in the Works
Stewart Seeds is in the initial planning stages of purchasing calves that are sired by our bulls. Over many years our bulls have been bred to work to make a profit for their owner. Stewart Seeds does feed out some calves every year and we feel that calves sired by our own bulls will be the most profitable for us. Our Angus bulls are bred to sire calves that will finish at the right weight with a high quality carcass. This is just the beginning so we are going to have some restrictions on the calves that we buy.

We want to purchase the calves in August and September and they must weigh in the 550 to 750 pound range at that time. We realize that this is a rather small window for your calves to fall into, but contact us anyway. We may be able to find some willing buyers and possibly even put a large group together.
Hopefully the calves would be identified and have a recorded birth date and sire. It could also be worth your while if the calves are preconditioned - i.e. weaned, bunk-broke, and vaccinated with clostridial and respiratory vaccines but this is not mandatory.

We have sold many, many bulls that are by sires with proven carcass quality and we are willing to stand behind our breeding program. Let us know in advance if you will have calves to sell and when they will be available. We have dreams of gathering carcass information from calves sired by our bulls and helping make the beef business better for the future. If you are interested please call Steve Gunn at 812/663-5941 or Dave Smith at 800-722-8557.

Field of Dreams Bull Sale
Parke and Nina Vehslage of PVF Simmentals have invited us to sell ten bulls in their bull sale at their farm near Brownstown, IN on Saturday April 5, 1997. We will have an excellent selection of Angus bulls in this sale. Please call for a catalog.

Kentucky EPD Bull Sale
The annual Kentucky EPD bull sale is also on Saturday April 5, 1997 at Paris, KY which is just northeast of Lexington. We have consigned three bulls to the sale which is based strictly on expected progeny differences or EPDs. It is one of the pioneer sales of this type in the country. Bulls have strict health requirements and must have EPDs for birth, weaning, milk, and yearling. Please call for more information or a catalog.

Bulls for Sale at the Farm
An excellent group of Angus bulls awaits your evaluation at the farm. Our performance/price sheet is loaded with data to help you evaluate each bull. All performance information is on it including birth, weaning, and yearling; EPDs including carcass; reproductive trait measurements of scrotal and pelvic; and ultrasound data which includes fat thickness, rib eye area, and percent fat which is an indicator of marbling.
Seventy-three percent of our bulls have interim carcass EPDs and eighty percent of those are positive for marbling and seventy-one percent of them are positive for rib eye area.
All of this information should help take the guesswork out of buying a bull and make each individual more predictable.

Remember that no creep feed is fed to any calves at Stewart Seeds. Creep feeding tends to mask the milking ability of the dams and hence their true maternal value is not realized.

Heifers Donated to Double M
Darrell Haines of Knightstown, IN has purchased two registered Angus heifers from Stewart Seeds and donated them to Double M Farm also of Knightstown. Double M Farm is managed by Jeff Hamm and is part of the Indiana Soldiers' and Sailors' Children's Home. The heifers will be used to increase their herd and also as junior projects for the students at the home.

Quality and Consistency
The most recent Beef Quality Audit conducted by the National Cattlemen's Beef Association revealed the fact the most needed improvements in the beef industry were in the areas of quality and consistency. The American Angus Association began the Certified Angus Beef program back in 1978 and it has been a tremendous success mainly because of predictable quality and consistency. The program was started to increase the demand for Angus bulls such as those available at Stewart Seeds. Why not increase the quality and consistency of the cattle that you sell and this will increase your profit. Think about it! It could be your best business decision since you got in the cattle business.

Ultrasound Data Reveals Muscle
1997 is the third consecutive year that Stewart Seeds has collected ultrasound data on their yearling bulls. Progress is being made in the area of lean to muscle ratio. Fifty-five bulls that we measured weighed 1098 actual at 385 days of age and had .15 inches of rib fat and a 13.7 square inch rib eye which reflected 1.26 square inches of rib eye per hundred pounds of live weight. The average amount of rib eye per hundredweight for the industry is probably not much over one square inch. You're invited to inspect these bulls and do your own evaluation.

Indiana Beef Evaluation Program
The IBEP bull sale is Thursday, April 17, 1997 at the Springville Feeder Auction. The sale will begin at 6 p.m. Stewart Seeds does have bulls on the performance test which is held for 125 days prior to the sale.

Showcase Sale
The annual Showcase Sale will be held at Creekside Farm near Chickasaw, OH on Sunday, August 31, 1997. Stewart Seeds will be consigning cow/calf pairs to this sale. This is a excellent opportunity to purchase a heifer prospect, a bred cow, or a potential herd sire. This is one of the outstanding sales of its kind in the whole United States.

Private Pick Sale
Annually around November first we offer a select group of cattle for sale. The features generally are weaned heifer calves that are suitable for showing or herd replacements. Also the young bulls are available at that time. Be sure to request a listing if you are interested.
